Three key issues the Philadelphia Phillies must address in the 2021/22 offseason

The Philadelphia Phillies outside of the 2022 season will be essential. The team hasn’t made it to post-season since 2011, and while they’ve been knocking on the door for most of this season, that just wasn’t enough.

Dave Dombrowski has shown some signs of wanting to make the right move now and then. Then again, most Phillies trade rumors have always been about players who might come out and not stars they can get in return.

With that in mind, let’s talk about Phillies’ off-season needs. While some of them may seem obvious, it’s worth noting that this team isn’t far from contentious. Just a few lineup tweaks and some trusted arms are out of the game and they might be contending sooner than people expect.

Velez Offseason 2022: Velez’s main off-season needs

It’s been a while since the Philadelphia Phillies have been a legitimate threat. That could soon change if Dombrowski is willing to spend some money off-season, as most top-tier free agents can solve most of their needs. Let’s break it down.

Bryce Harper needs help

Bryce Harper has certainly silenced those who doubt whether or not he is a franchise player. He’s coming out of the season MVP by a caliber. He scored .309 with 101 points scored, 84 RBI points, 13 base stolen, .429 OBP, .615 SLG and 1,044 OPS. But he cannot win alone.

The Phillies really need to give Matt Vierling a longer leash in left field. He is a local talent and has proven that he can be an immediate contributor.

Also, they need Andrew McCutchen to be demoted to the role of DH or hit because he’s far from the star he was during his days in Pittsburgh. Perhaps Starling Marte would be a good choice for them as a free agent center player.

Couple of stadium signatures

The short layover has been a big problem for the Philadelphia Phillies this season. They need a major defensive improvement in this situation and they will have a lot of options to try and resolve that need. Trevor Storey, Javier Baez, Carlos Correa and Cory Seeger will all be free agents who should consider signing and there is no reason to believe they can’t sign any of them.

Also, while Alec Bom showed glimpses of great attacking talent during his junior season, he fell dramatically last year. They need a defensive upgrade in the hot corner, with Chris Bryant being the best possible option for that spot.

He’s friends with Bryce Harper, so it’s not uncommon to think he could call him in to solve one of the Phillies’ biggest off-season needs.

Bulls need a massive upgrade

The Philadelphia Phillies’ Bullpup was terrible last season. They had the second worst game in baseball history according to the Elias Athletic Bureau and it appears that no lead is safe with them. Despite their strong spin at the start (except for Aaron Nola’s terrible season), they were out of matches quite often.

Dave Dombrowski needs to get to the drawing board and start from scratch. Bullpen is their biggest problem, and aside from Hector Néris and rookies Connor Brogdon and JoJo Romero, it seems that no other player should be safe or untouchable.

It’s clear that overhauling this team will require a lot of investment, and that’s the biggest question mark going forward.

Phils has shown that they are willing to spend with Bryce Harper’s massive contract as well by retaining JT Realmuto. Now, it remains to be seen if he is determined to be better now and make the most of his star while still in his prime, or whether Velez will spend another decade out of competition in the final.
